Well done again Elizabeth. Oliver's right hemisphere is clearly very active.... However, he did get a bit distracted by Christian left hemisphere 'beliefs' after you raised Pascal's wager which seems to propose a rather left hemisphere binary choice about belief. As you know Mc Gilchrist loves to use his RH to reimagine binary choices as dipoles and then seek a way forward. So in ch 28 of 'Matter' he proposes a third way via "McGilchrist’s Wager" - "if God is an eternal Becoming, fulfilled as God through the response of his creation, and we, for our part, constantly more fulfilled through our response to God; then we are literally partners in the creation of the universe, perhaps even in the becoming of God (who is himself Becoming as much as Being): in which case it is imperative that we try to reach and know and love that God." I think we come to Christian Belief by way of a way of being in the world (& church - though his was not necessary for McGilchrist) and from there we discover the necessity (for me anyway) of God's love in the material world via the continual creation/incarnation/resurrection of Jesus in us and through us. For this GoodNews, words, in the 21C, have passed their use by date. Our LH culture has no words to express the TRUE mythos of Jesus. So now only choirs and RH experience matters (nature, poetry, music for McG). For me this has been via WCCM Christian meditation. I have tried McGilchrist's wager long before I knew about it and find that when "we try to reach and know and love that God" we ALWAYS find that we were being loved into being before the foundation of the world.

About this podcast

The Sacred is a podcast about our deepest values, the stories that shape us and how we can build empathy and understanding between people who are very different.

Each episode features a conversation with someone who has a public voice, from academics to journalists, playwrights and politicians. We ask them where they have come from, what they are trying to do and what might help heal our very divided public conversations.

The Sacred is hosted by Elizabeth Oldfield, former director of Theos think tank.
